Ranger
The Ranger in ArcheAge Chronicles is not only an archer: it fights up close with a lightning-charged Hatchet (Stormsplitter, Overcharge, Shocking Kick, Wind Blade, Storm Chaser) or at range with a Longbow (Rapid Fire, Fire Arrow, Aimed Shot, Ice Arrow, Crescent Kick), under the motto "Hunt Without Limits".

The Hatchet's skills are Stormsplitter, Overcharge, Shocking Kick, Wind Blade and Storm Chaser; the Longbow's are Rapid Fire, Fire Arrow, Aimed Shot, Ice Arrow and Crescent Kick, as GameVu reported XL Games' class reveal on Jul 31, 2026. Azrial, in his class guide of Oct 5, 2026, calls it the class whose name gives the wrong impression most: you hear Ranger and think bow, but the Hatchet is an aggressive close-range weapon built on mobility, counters, wind and lightning. Its lore hero is Tahyang Kahlzit, the legendary hero of the Firran who chose a free, wandering life. It is one of four Classes.

Hatchet
The Hatchet is a melee weapon for fast fighting built on evasion, counterattacks and combos, charged with lightning. GameVu's report of the reveal describes each skill: Stormsplitter is a series of hatchet strikes that ends by calling down lightning, Overcharge releases the lightning's power as an explosion, Shocking Kick dashes in like lightning and opens with a kick, Wind Blade deflects an attack and counters, and Storm Chaser closes the distance after a successful counter and carries on the combo. Azrial sums up the loop: get close, evade, counter, then chase the enemy down again.
Creators who played the Network Test rate the Hatchet highly. Ser Medieval said on Sep 14, 2026 that its combo skills inflict shock and strengthen ranged attacks, that it was fast and did a great deal of damage, and he ranked it level with the Warrior's Longsword as his favorite weapon in the test; he added that the parry on the Hatchet and the Longsword took the combat "to another level". The Hatchet also throws: XL Games' own PvP clip shows the Ranger throwing an axe.
Longbow
The Longbow is the Ranger players expect: it keeps its distance, marks a target and pursues it at the best range. Rapid Fire keeps up steady pressure, Fire Arrow fires an explosive arrow, Aimed Shot is a long-range sniping shot, Ice Arrow freezes an enemy in place, and Crescent Kick counters and opens the distance again so you can return to firing. Azrial's summary: "hatchet wants to close the gap and longbow wants to protect it." Ser Medieval reported that Longbow shots can inflict Burn and long-range attacks Freeze.
Traits
Each Ranger weapon has its own trait tree, as with every weapon in the game: XL Games wrote on Oct 15, 2026 that "every weapon type has its own trait tree", so points spent on the Hatchet do nothing for the Longbow. Trait points come from Raeven's Coilstones, each guarded by a boss, not from levels. FrozenCloud found trait points so limited in the Network Test that he could only invest in one tree; see Progression and Traits.
Throwing the axe in PvP
XL Games' first PvP clip (Sep 4, 2026) pits a Ranger against a Longsword Warrior on a sunny path of ruins; its description reads "The Ranger throws an axe. The Warrior parries it, sending it straight back." Creative Director Jay Lee wrote on Oct 4, 2026 that the Ranger with the hatchets in that footage was Executive Producer Yongjin Ham. Azrial expects the Hatchet's mobility to be especially lethal in PvP, which the free demo opened to the public for the first time.
The third weapon
XL Games has promised a third weapon for every class but has not named the Ranger's, as of Oct 20, 2026. Creators saw a third weapon on the Network Test character screen, locked, and read it as a Crossbow; Azrial says its tree points to poison, impact damage and triggered extra attacks, and Ser Medieval read grenade shots and scatter shots in it. That is a creator's reading of a test build. There is no crossbow in the demo or announced for Early Access.
Which Ranger weapon to start with
Azrial's advice in his demo guide of Oct 12, 2026 is not to write the Ranger off if you do not usually play archers: the Longbow suits players who like keeping their distance and lining up shots, while the Hatchet gives a mobile, close-range option with its own counters. Because the Ranger carries both and swaps in combat, a player can open at range and finish in melee. See Combat for how swapping, dodging and parrying work.
Gender
The Ranger is female only at Early Access, as Ser Medieval reported from the Network Test on Sep 14, 2026; XL Games has not stated each class's gender in writing. XL Games says classes stay gender-locked at Early Access and that more gender options will come later, "starting with select classes", with no date as of Oct 20, 2026. See Character Creation and Gender Lock.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Ranger a bow class in ArcheAge Chronicles? Only half of it: the ArcheAge Chronicles Ranger fights at range with a Longbow and up close with a lightning-charged Hatchet. It carries both and swaps between them in combat.
Should I use the Hatchet or the Longbow in ArcheAge Chronicles? In ArcheAge Chronicles, the Hatchet suits players who like fast melee with evasion, counters and lightning combos, and the Longbow suits players who like keeping distance with Rapid Fire, Aimed Shot and Ice Arrow. Creators who played the Network Test rated the Hatchet among the best weapons in the game.
Is there a crossbow in ArcheAge Chronicles? No crossbow is announced for ArcheAge Chronicles, as of Oct 20, 2026. Creators saw a locked weapon they read as a Crossbow on the Ranger's Network Test character screen; XL Games only says each class will get a third weapon.
Is the Ranger female only in ArcheAge Chronicles? A creator reported from the Sep 2026 Network Test that the ArcheAge Chronicles Ranger is female only. XL Games keeps classes gender-locked at Early Access and plans more gender options later, starting with select classes.
Can the Ranger throw its axe in ArcheAge Chronicles? Yes: XL Games' own PvP clip shows the ArcheAge Chronicles Ranger throwing an axe, which a Warrior then parries back.

ArcheAge ChroniclesArcheAge Chronicles is XL Games' open-world action MMORPG set in Auroria 50 years after the original ArcheAge, formerly announced as ArcheAge 2. A free Steam Next Fest demo runs Oct 19 to 26, 2026, and Early Access on Steam is planned for later in 2026 with no date announced, as of Oct 20, 2026. -
ClassesArcheAge Chronicles has four classes, Warrior, Ranger, Berserker and Mage, each with two weapons at Early Access (eight in all) and a third weapon per class planned. You swap between your two weapons in combat, and every weapon has its own trait tree. -
Progression and TraitsIn ArcheAge Chronicles you level mostly from quests, discoveries and points of interest; each level gives stat points for six stats (Strength, Agility, Constitution, Intelligence, Talent, Endurance). Trait points come only from Raeven's Coilstones, each guarded by a boss, and every weapon has its own trait tree; Nui Tears raise max HP at Nui Statues, and field bosses and chests give gear.
-
PvPPvP in ArcheAge Chronicles is opt-in by channel. In standard channels nobody can attack you; in PvP channels anyone outside your party and guild can, you switch at a Nui Statue with a cooldown, and PvP channels give 10 to 15% bonus EXP on monster kills but no reward for killing players yet (XL Games, Oct 4, 2026).
-
CombatArcheAge Chronicles uses action combat, not tab targeting: light and heavy attacks, dodges, rolls, blocks and parries on a stamina bar, two weapons you swap between in a fight, and skills reached through button combinations instead of a hotbar of dozens of slots. Ranged attacks can be parried straight back at the attacker. -
Character Creation and Gender LockIn ArcheAge Chronicles you can take a pre-made character or build your own with detailed sliders, but each class is locked to one gender, and XL Games says that stays at Early Access; more gender options are in development, "starting with select classes". No playable races have been announced, as of Oct 20, 2026.
