Combat

ArcheAge Chronicles uses action combat, not tab targeting: light and heavy attacks, dodges, rolls, blocks and parries on a stamina bar, two weapons you swap between in a fight, and skills reached through button combinations instead of a hotbar of dozens of slots. Ranged attacks can be parried straight back at the attacker.

ArcheAge Chronicles uses action combat, not tab targeting: you aim your own light and heavy attacks, dodge, roll, block and parry on a stamina bar, swap between two weapons in the middle of a fight, and reach skills through button combinations rather than dozens of hotbar slots. Ranged attacks can even be parried back at the attacker. In XL Games' developer diary video of Oct 10, 2024 (Korean speech with English subtitles), the developers say they wanted combat as well made as a single-player action game, and that because MMO combat is usually less precise, they worked hard on hit detection and enemy AI to get there. Steam's store page sums it up as "fluid, sophisticated action combat" in which you can "jump, fall, roll, dash, block, and parry". The four classes that use it are on Classes, and the free demo that lets you try it until Oct 26, 2026 is on Demo.

Why action combat

XL Games set out to put "the tense, acrobatic combat found in single-player action games" into "a vast, persistent online world", it wrote in its first developer diary post on Oct 10, 2024. Executive Producer Yongjin Ham wrote on Jul 31, 2025 that the team built combat "from scratch with combo-driven mechanics, dodges, and some really satisfying weapon-specific skills" that "rewards smart play over simply spamming skill rotations". It is the biggest break from the original game, which used tab targeting; the rest of what changed is on Differences From ArcheAge.

The hard part, the developers say in the same diary video, is the network: action combat on an MMO server runs into limits that a single-player game never meets. Ham's letter of Oct 18, 2026 lists "improved attack hit detection" among the fixes made between the September Network Test and the demo, and says combat, balance and performance will keep improving on the way to Early Access.

Controls and stamina

Every attack and dodge spends stamina, so you cannot simply hold the attack button. In FrozenCloud's Network Test review of Sep 14, 2026, the combat is "stamina based, so no holding left click and win": spend too much and you cannot dodge, enemies hit hard, and combos come from combinations of the left and right mouse buttons that differ by weapon and class. XL Games described the same layout in a Wccftech Q&A of Aug 1, 2025: light and heavy attacks, defense, dodge and class actions sit on buttons, and special abilities come through modifiers, "not through managing dozens of ability slots". MeinMMO's demo report of Oct 20, 2026 lists combos on the mouse buttons plus WASD, a dodge, a parry, a jump, a sprint and weapon swap on Q.

Stamina grows with your character. Endurance, one of the six stats you raise at each level, increases stamina and defense (XL Games, Oct 15, 2026), and gear can add more; how stats and trait points work is on Progression and Traits.

Parry, dodge and counter

Reading the enemy is the core of a fight. In XL Games' video of Oct 7, 2026 (Korean speech with English subtitles), Ham says each class has three weapons, two of them ready first, that combat changes with the weapon, light or heavy, and that the fun lies in watching the enemy's movement and deciding yourself whether to dodge, parry and counter, and when to attack. Enemies throw red attacks that cannot be blocked and must be dodged, FrozenCloud and Kyunghyang Games both report, and enemies can dodge your hits too.

Ranged attacks can be parried and sent back. XL Games' 41-second "PvP Gameplay #1" clip of Sep 4, 2026 shows a duel in a sunlit ruin; its description reads: "The Ranger throws an axe. The Warrior parries it, sending it straight back." XL Games later revealed that Creative Director Jay Lee played the Longsword Warrior and Ham the Hatchet Ranger in that footage, and Lee called parrying ranged attacks and reflecting them "one of the most fun parts" of their PvP tests (Steam, Oct 4, 2026). Fights between players are on PvP.

For many players the parry is the highlight. Ser Medieval, reviewing the Network Test on Sep 14, 2026, says the parry on the Warrior's Longsword and the Ranger's Hatchet "took the game's combat to another level entirely": he could parry and reflect projectiles from bosses and ordinary enemies alike. Press found it forgiving in the demo: MeinMMO called the parry window "quite long", and Kyunghyang Games found parry timing generous and dodging nearly free, with staggered enemies open to an execution. In Ser Medieval's Throne of Hinnon guide, a boss whose health bar flashes is about to break and open itself to a fatal attack (see Throne of Hinnon).

Two weapons and their skills

Each class carries two weapons at Early Access and switches between them on the spot: the Warrior's Longsword and Greatsword, the Ranger's Hatchet and Longbow, the Berserker's Axe (with shield) and Warhammer, and the Mage's Elemental Staff and Wavesword. A third weapon per class is planned before full release, XL Games' Early Access FAQ says. Each weapon has its own trait tree: "your longsword tree and your greatsword tree are completely separate", Global Project Manager Don wrote on Oct 15, 2026, and traits add new skills or change how existing ones play. His example: one Greatsword player takes Armor Break and turns Sunder into a two-hit Sweeping Slash, another takes Pummel Strike, an attack usable while guarding that grants a damage shield. The classes are compared on the Classes page, with a page each for the Warrior, Ranger, Berserker and Mage.

The swap divided Network Test players. FrozenCloud found weapon switching "clunky" and warned that if trait points stay scarce, the second weapon slot risks becoming "dead weight"; in the same passage he notes a lock-on feature, though he preferred the free camera, and enemies' unblockable red attacks. Azrial, in his own review, mostly had one weapon that was clearly better and little reason to swap so early in progression.

Status effects

Weapons build status gauges: the Berserker's Axe builds Bleed and the Warhammer builds Burn, the Mage's Wall of Fire raises Burn and the Wavesword's Thundersnow raises Freeze, according to XL Games' class reveals reported by MMORPG.com (Sep 17 and Sep 28, 2026). Which effects each weapon applies, and how, is on the class pages.

Solo and in a group

The combat is meant to work alone and better together. Ham describes the goal as action that is fun solo and more fun with others, and asks players to send feedback because combat and growth are still being refined. XL Games told Wccftech on Aug 1, 2025 that one of its key goals is that the game "feels as good playing solo as it does in a group", and dungeons can be played by one player or a party of up to four (see Dungeons). Large open-world fights draw crowds: field bosses and their difficulty are on Bosses.

Controller or mouse and keyboard

ArcheAge Chronicles has full controller support on Steam, and MeinMMO recommends a controller over mouse and keyboard after playing the demo (Oct 20, 2026). The PC is the only platform for Early Access; PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions were announced in Sep 2024, but no console date has been announced as of Oct 20, 2026 (see Platforms and Crossplay). Whether there is a lock-on, and how it works, XL Games has not described as of Oct 20, 2026; FrozenCloud saw one in the Network Test.

Is the combat good?

Early verdicts are mixed to positive. Azrial, a fan of action combat over tab targeting, called the Network Test combat "okay", "decent" and a foundation he could enjoy that "definitely needs more complexity": a little like a less complicated Black Desert, a bit like New World but slower, built on chaining light and heavy attacks into stronger ones rather than a hotbar, with combos still basic at low level. FrozenCloud felt the fundamentals were good, with "good weight", and scored the test 7 out of 10.

It takes time to click. Azrial's demo guide of Oct 12, 2026 advises giving the combat time: it took him an hour or two in the Network Test, and he suggests learning your defensive options (a parry, a counter) and trying both weapons, because the Longsword's appeal is parrying and countering and the Ranger's and Mage's two weapons play very differently.

The press after the demo was cooler. MeinMMO's Karsten Scholz found the combat "action-packed" with weight but "too unpolished and not challenging enough", in a review titled "After the demo of ArcheAge Chronicles, I wish New World back" (Oct 20, 2026). Notebookcheck relayed both praise and complaints of "sluggish movement, clunky controls and technical issues" from players' videos. More reactions are on Reception and Previews.

Frequently asked questions

Is ArcheAge Chronicles tab target? No. ArcheAge Chronicles uses action combat: you aim attacks, dodge, block and parry yourself on a stamina bar, unlike the original ArcheAge's tab targeting.

Is ArcheAge Chronicles combat like Elden Ring or New World? XL Games named Elden Ring, The Witcher 3 and Zelda: Breath of the Wild as influences in 2025, and creators compare its action combat to New World and Black Desert. MeinMMO found it less polished than New World after the Oct 2026 demo.

Can I use a controller in ArcheAge Chronicles? Yes. ArcheAge Chronicles lists full controller support on Steam, and MeinMMO recommends a controller for the demo.

Does ArcheAge Chronicles have lock-on? XL Games has not described a lock-on as of Oct 20, 2026, but the creator FrozenCloud saw a lock-on feature in the Sep 2026 Network Test.

Can you parry in ArcheAge Chronicles? Yes. ArcheAge Chronicles has a parry, and ranged attacks such as a thrown axe can be parried straight back at the attacker.

Is ArcheAge Chronicles combat good? Creators who played the Sep 2026 Network Test called the ArcheAge Chronicles combat a decent, fluid foundation that needs more depth, while MeinMMO found the demo's combat too unpolished and too easy. The free Steam demo, until Oct 26, 2026, lets you judge for yourself.

Can you switch weapons in combat in ArcheAge Chronicles? Yes. Each ArcheAge Chronicles character carries two weapons of its class and swaps between them on the spot, each with its own trait tree.
