ArcheAge Chronicles

ArcheAge Chronicles is XL Games' open-world action MMORPG, formerly announced as ArcheAge 2, set in Auroria 50 years after the original ArcheAge; a free Steam Next Fest demo runs Oct 19 to 26, 2026, and Early Access on Steam is planned for later in 2026, with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions announced. This viki covers its release plans, demo, price and pay-to-win promise, platforms and PC requirements, its four classes and their weapons, combat, PvP channels, dungeons and bosses, trade runs, crafting and housing, its world and story and how it differs from ArcheAge, and every key paragraph plays the moment on YouTube that shows it.

ArcheAge Chronicles is XL Games' open-world action MMORPG set in Auroria 50 years after the original ArcheAge, formerly announced as ArcheAge 2; it enters Early Access on Steam later in 2026 (no date has been announced, as of Oct 20, 2026), and a free Steam Next Fest demo runs from Oct 19 to Oct 26, 2026. XL Games' own tour, "A Quick Look at Auroria" (Sep 7, 2026), shows how it plays in 45 seconds of captured play with the full HUD: a character runs through a sunny camp, brews a potion at a cauldron, fights a maned beast, joins a party against a large bear with a boss bar, swims among coral and glides over a lake toward a ruined tower. Over it the developers say: "Not everything in Auroria is about combat. Gather, process, and craft what you need. We didn't want a map covered in markers telling you where to go next. Auroria is built to be wandered. Go where you want, discover new things, and team up with other players." It is buy to play, not free to play, and its price has not been announced.

Key art. Sunlit jungle valley framed by a vine-covered stone arch at left and a ruined wall at right, with two huge broken columns leaning across the sky. In the foreground four figures stand on mossy rocks with their backs to the viewer: a man in dark armor with a long red cape at center, a woman in a long pale blue coat holding a glowing staff at left, an archer behind her, and a broad man in a dark coat holding a big axe at right. Waterfalls, green cliffs and a castle on a distant mountain fill the background. The words ArcheAge Chronicles stand in large bronze letters in the sky.

What ArcheAge Chronicles is

ArcheAge Chronicles is an action MMORPG in a seamless open world, built around exploration and small-group cooperation rather than mass competition. In XL Games' video "The Direction the Devs Are Taking" (Oct 7, 2026), Executive Producer Yongjin Ham, speaking Korean with English subtitles, says the team wanted action combat with a good feel that anyone can learn, and the freedom to explore whatever looks interesting; in a word, he calls it an action MMORPG built on an open world. The official site's title says the same: "Open World Action MMORPG". The label has moved over the years. At the 2024 reveal XL Games called it an "online action RPG", and in Jul 2025 Ham wrote "this isn't ArcheAge 2. It's not a traditional MMORPG"; by 2026 the Early Access FAQ says "As an MMO, ArcheAge Chronicles truly comes to life when players come together." It is an MMO in the plain sense: always online, with other players sharing each zone. How it differs from the 2013 game is on Differences From ArcheAge.

Ham's own one-line pitch in 2024 was "a fresh take on the ArcheAge universe", shifting "away from large-scale competitive battles to smaller group activities" (S1). XL Games told Massively OP in 2025 to think of it as "a hybrid of games like Zelda: Breath of the Wild and ArcheAge", with The Witcher 3 and Elden Ring among its influences.

Auroria and the story

ArcheAge Chronicles takes place on Auroria, the continent of the original game's lore, "roughly 50 years after the events of the original", during the Age of Pioneers when settlers rediscover a land left wild for thousands of years. Steam's description casts the player as "an experienced explorer" and "a member of an established trading company" who investigates "a catastrophic airship crash" and is drawn into the intrigue around it. XL Games' 2024 developer diary says the story begins with a conflict over Auroria between frontier settlers who want independence and an alliance of nations from the new continent that wants to keep Auroria a colony. Early Access covers three regions: Diamond Shores (the demo's region), Gylden Ruins and Astron Plains. The land is on Auroria and the plot so far on Story.

Classes and weapons

There are four classes at Early Access, Warrior, Ranger, Berserker and Mage, and each has two weapons, eight in all. Ham says in the Oct 7, 2026 video that the build being prepared has three regions of Auroria and four classes, each designed with three weapons: two come first and the rest are still in development. The Early Access FAQ confirms the third weapon for each class is planned before full release, without naming them. The weapons are:

  • Warrior: Longsword and Greatsword
  • Ranger: Hatchet and Longbow
  • Berserker: Axe (with shield) and Warhammer
  • Mage: Elemental Staff and Wavesword

Each weapon has its own trait tree and changes how a class fights, and a character can swap weapons on the spot. Classes are gender-locked at the start of Early Access; XL Games said on Oct 18, 2026 that more gender options are in development, "starting with select classes". Which gender each class is has only been reported by creators, not stated by XL Games. Everything about choosing is on Classes, and the creator itself on Character Creation and Gender Lock.

Combat

Combat is real-time action, not tab targeting: you dodge, block, parry and counter, with light and heavy attacks and a stamina bar. FrozenCloud's review of the Sep 2026 Network Test describes a two-weapon system you can swap on the spot, each weapon with its own moves, deeper combos unlocked by trait points, and stamina that punishes spamming ("Spend too much stamina and you won't be able to dodge"). XL Games' 2024 diary said the goal was combat as well made as a single-player action game, which meant hard work on hit detection and enemy AI in an online world; the Steam page lists "jump, fall, roll, dash, block, and parry". Status effects such as Bleed, Burn and Freeze build up from certain weapons. More is on Combat.

PvP channels

PvP in ArcheAge Chronicles is chosen by channel, not forced by zone. Each zone runs as copies called channels of about 100 players; in a standard channel nobody can attack you, and in a PvP channel anyone except your party and guild can. Azrial's breakdown of XL Games' PvP post (Oct 19, 2026) walks through it: same zone, same quests and monsters, "just with PvP turned on", switched at a Nui Statue with a cooldown so nobody can escape a lost fight. PvP channels give 10 to 15% more experience from monster kills, and there is a kill log but no reward for killing players yet, as of Oct 20, 2026. The original's mass faction war and territorial conquest are gone; no sieges or castles are announced. Details are on PvP, and parties, channels and guilds on Multiplayer and Guilds.

Life skills, trade and housing

Gathering, crafting, trade runs and housing return from the original, which XL Games calls "ArcheAge DNA". The Auroria tour shows trade goods being made and a wagon driven along a road by night and day while the narration says: "It's time to test your wagon driving skills. Housing, crafting, trade. This is ArcheAge DNA." The Steam page promises "hunting, gathering, housing, farming, and crafting", and trade runs in which players defend their routes. Housing has moved from open-world plots to dedicated housing zones with parallel channels. Trade and housing are in Early Access but not in the demo. See Trade Runs, Crafting and Life Skills and Housing and Farming. Mounts, ships and naval combat have not been confirmed for ArcheAge Chronicles, as of Oct 20, 2026 (Mounts and Sailing); gliders and swimming are in (Exploration and Gliders).

Dungeons, bosses and the open world

Auroria is shared with other players, and field bosses draw crowds. Azrial's review of the Network Test (Sep 14, 2026) says he kept running into other players and recognizing names around towns, and found groups of players gathered around bosses, farming them as they would in New World. Dungeons are instanced for one player or a party of up to four and can be soloed; raids are on the Early Access list, but their size has not been stated for 2026. Field bosses drop gear and crafting materials, and a boss guards each Raeven's Coilstone, which gives trait points. The demo adds a hidden high-level dungeon, the Throne of Hinnon. See Dungeons and Bosses.

Progression

ArcheAge Chronicles levels you mostly through quests, discoveries and points of interest rather than killing monsters, XL Games wrote on Oct 15, 2026. Each level gives points for six stats (Strength, Agility, Constitution, Intelligence, Talent and Endurance), placed freely; trait points come separately from Raeven's Coilstones; and Nui Tears raise maximum health at Nui Statues. Global Project Manager Don summed it up: "Progression should never feel like a chore. Exploring makes you better in a fight." Each zone's riddling Hersander's Tower unlocks the Hereafter Challenge, a timed boss fight with a leaderboard. Everything is on Progression and Traits, and a first-day walkthrough on Beginner's Guide.

The free demo

The free Steam Next Fest demo runs from Oct 19, 10:00 AM to Oct 26, 10:00 AM PDT, 2026, worldwide, with no sign-up. It holds about two to three hours of quests around Diamond Shores, all four classes with two weapons each, the first public PvP and the hidden Throne of Hinnon; housing and trade are left out, and progress does not carry over to Early Access. XL Games announced on Oct 19, 2026 that the demo reached No. 1 on Steam Next Fest's Top Demos chart, and SteamDB recorded a peak of 20,507 players at once (read Oct 20, 2026). Times in every zone and what is inside are on Demo; player numbers on Steam Player Count.

Early Access

Early Access on Steam is planned for later in 2026 (Kakao Games has said Q4 2026); no date has been announced, as of Oct 20, 2026. Ham wrote on Sep 15, 2026 that Early Access is "coming sooner than you might think" and planned "for later this year"; Steam still reads "To be announced". Ser Medieval reads out the Steam page's Early Access FAQ: the team launches in Early Access to hear from players and respond quickly, and expects it to last "approximately 9 to 12 months", with major and minor updates. Early Access holds three regions, four classes with eight weapons, exploration, dungeons, raids, PvP, housing, crafting, trading, and company and guild activities. The release windows that came and went since 2021 are on Release Date and Early Access.

Price and pay to win

ArcheAge Chronicles is buy to play, not free to play, and XL Games has not announced the price, as of Oct 20, 2026. In the Oct 7, 2026 video Ham says it is a buy-to-play package game that will never sell items that make you stronger or speed your growth, what players call pay to win; there will be no paid shop when Early Access starts, and if a shop opens later, what it sells and when will be shared in advance, still with nothing pay to win. The Steam FAQ adds that the price "may change at full release", with any change announced in advance. No edition, founder pack or pre-order exists, as of Oct 20, 2026. See Price and Pay to Win.

Platforms

ArcheAge Chronicles' Early Access is on PC through Steam only, for Windows, with full controller support. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions were announced with the game's reveal at PlayStation's State of Play on Sep 24, 2024, and their store pages (and the Epic Games Store's) are still live, but there is no console date and XL Games has made no statement about consoles in 2026, as of Oct 20, 2026. Crossplay has not been announced. Steam asks for a 64-bit Windows 10 PC with 16 GB of memory, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER or AMD Radeon RX 6600, and 100 GB on an SSD. See Platforms and Crossplay and PC System Requirements.

XL Games and the ArcheAge series

ArcheAge Chronicles began as ArcheAge 2, revealed by Kakao Games at G-Star in Busan on Nov 17, 2022. In Kakao Games' interview from that show, XL Games' founder Jake Song, speaking Korean, calls ArcheAge 2 the sequel to ArcheAge, a seamless open-world action MMORPG made for PC and consoles, with action combat as the top priority and Unreal Engine 5 visuals. It was renamed ArcheAge Chronicles at Sony's State of Play on Sep 24, 2024, and XL Games now says it is neither ArcheAge 2, nor a direct sequel, nor a reboot. Jake Song left XL Games in early 2025 and does not lead the game; Yongjin Ham is its executive producer and Jay Lee, who spent 14 years on ArcheAge, its creative director and lead game designer.

XL Games, the Seongnam studio Song founded in 2006, made the original ArcheAge (Korea, 2013), whose Western servers closed on Jun 27, 2024 and Korean service on Mar 6, 2025. Kakao Games, which owns most of XL Games, published ArcheAge Chronicles until Ham announced on Sep 15, 2026 that XL Games would self-publish it; the PlayStation, Xbox and Epic store pages still list Kakao Games Corp. On Sep 8, 2026 XL Games disclosed the sale of the ArcheAge IP and the separate ArcheAge S project to Align Studio, effective Oct 27, 2026; the Chronicles project stays with XL Games, and what the sale means for its name has not been disclosed. The studio is on XL Games, the other games on ArcheAge Series, the road from 2020 on Development History and every official video on Trailers.

Reception so far

The demo's first days drew both interest and doubt. Inven Global reported its No. 1 spot among Steam Next Fest demos on opening day, and SteamDB's peak was 20,507 players at once, as of Oct 20, 2026; the original ArcheAge never passed 7,000 on Steam, Notebookcheck noted. MeinMMO found the combat "action-packed" but "too unpolished and not challenging enough", while creators who played the Network Test, such as Ser Medieval and Azrial, called it a real MMO with a world full of players. Neither the game nor the demo had Steam user reviews on Oct 20, 2026. More is on Reception and Previews.

  • Bosses

ArcheAge Chronicles has field bosses that roam the open world and drop gear and unique crafting materials, bosses that guard Raeven's Coilstones (the source of trait points), dungeon bosses, story bosses, and a timed, souped-up boss fight with a leaderboard in each zone's Hereafter Challenge (XL Games, Oct 15, 2026).

Classes

  • Berserker

The Berserker is the heavy class of ArcheAge Chronicles: an Axe with a shield that builds Bleed and has a chain (Reckless Destroyer, Shield Slam, Brutal Crash, Reel In), or a Warhammer that builds Burn and stored Thunder toward Meteor Hammer and Galactic Impact.

  • Classes

ArcheAge Chronicles has four classes, Warrior, Ranger, Berserker and Mage, each with two weapons at Early Access (eight in all) and a third weapon per class planned. You swap between your two weapons in combat, and every weapon has its own trait tree.

  • Mage

The Mage in ArcheAge Chronicles casts fire and lightning at range with the Elemental Staff, whose Retain mechanic stores spells to recast without incantation and builds Energy Core toward Shooting Star, or fights in melee with frost through the Wavesword (Tidal Rend, Thundersnow). There is no healing weapon at Early Access.

  • Ranger

The Ranger in ArcheAge Chronicles is not only an archer: it fights up close with a lightning-charged Hatchet (Stormsplitter, Overcharge, Shocking Kick, Wind Blade, Storm Chaser) or at range with a Longbow (Rapid Fire, Fire Arrow, Aimed Shot, Ice Arrow, Crescent Kick), under the motto "Hunt Without Limits".

  • Warrior

The Warrior is the ArcheAge Chronicles sword class, "Hold the Line. Break the Enemy.", fighting with a Longsword (parries, counters or a path of blood that spends and drains HP) or a Greatsword that builds Resolve for heavy blows such as Final Cleave, Rampage and Warrior's Cry.

Development and Release

  • ArcheAge Series

The ArcheAge series began with XL Games' sandbox MMORPG ArcheAge (Korea, January 2013), whose Western servers closed on Jun 27, 2024 and Korean service on Mar 6, 2025. It continues with ArcheAge War (2023), ArcheAge Chronicles (formerly ArcheAge 2, Early Access planned for later in 2026), ArcheAge S: Strait of Freedom (planned for 2027) and the China-only ArcheAge Returns.

  • Development History

ArcheAge Chronicles is made by XL Games in South Korea. It began as ArcheAge 2 (made official in 2020, first shown at G-Star on Nov 17, 2022), was renamed ArcheAge Chronicles at Sony's State of Play on Sep 24, 2024, missed every release window from 2024 on, and has been self-published by XL Games since 2026. Early Access on Steam is planned for later in 2026, with no date announced as of Oct 20, 2026.

  • Trailers

The main ArcheAge Chronicles trailer is the State of Play Trailer of Sep 24, 2024, which revealed the game under its new name; the newest is the Official Demo Trailer of Oct 19, 2026, for the free Steam Next Fest demo. XL Games' YouTube channel holds nine official videos, and Kakao Games released the first ArcheAge 2 teaser on Nov 18, 2022. There is no launch trailer yet, as of Oct 20, 2026.

  • XL Games

XL Games is the South Korean studio Jake Song founded in 2006, maker of ArcheAge, ArcheAge War and ArcheAge Chronicles. It is majority-owned by Kakao Games, and since 2026 it publishes ArcheAge Chronicles itself.

Dungeons and Raids

  • Dungeons

ArcheAge Chronicles dungeons are instanced just for you or your party of up to four, share quest progress inside, and can be soloed (XL Games, Oct 15, 2026). Raids are on the Early Access content list, but their size has not been announced as of Oct 20, 2026.

Economy and Monetization

  • Trade Runs

Trade runs return in ArcheAge Chronicles: you make trade goods and haul them by Trade Wagon to sell in other regions, alone or with others. Trading is in Early Access but not in the Steam Next Fest demo, and XL Games has not described the risks, routes or PvP rules of a run, as of Oct 20, 2026.

Gameplay

  • Combat

ArcheAge Chronicles uses action combat, not tab targeting: light and heavy attacks, dodges, rolls, blocks and parries on a stamina bar, two weapons you swap between in a fight, and skills reached through button combinations instead of a hotbar of dozens of slots. Ranged attacks can be parried straight back at the attacker.

  • Exploration and Gliders

Auroria is built to be wandered, XL Games says: few map markers, points of interest and chests that give most of your EXP, a glider you earn through quests, swimming and underwater gathering, and Nui Statues that creators report double as fast travel points. Mounts are not confirmed, as of Oct 20, 2026.

  • Multiplayer and Guilds

ArcheAge Chronicles is an always-online game you can play solo or with others. Zones are split into channels of about 100 players, parties hold up to four, guilds and "company" activities are in Early Access, and the demo runs servers in five locations (North America East and West, Europe Central, Asia East and South).

Beginner Guides

  • Beginner's Guide

In your first hours of ArcheAge Chronicles, pick a class by which of its two weapons you like, place your stat points every level, explore points of interest (most EXP comes from quests and discoveries, not kills), break Raeven's Coilstones for trait points, bring Nui Tears to Nui Statues for more HP, earn the glider, group up for field bosses, and switch between standard and PvP channels at a Nui Statue.

  • Character Creation and Gender Lock

In ArcheAge Chronicles you can take a pre-made character or build your own with detailed sliders, but each class is locked to one gender, and XL Games says that stays at Early Access; more gender options are in development, "starting with select classes". No playable races have been announced, as of Oct 20, 2026.

Dungeon Guides

  • Throne of Hinnon

Throne of Hinnon is the hidden high-level dungeon of the ArcheAge Chronicles Steam Next Fest demo (Oct 19 to 26, 2026), outside the normal quest path and opened with a key hidden in the world. A creator found the key on a ledge at the Sunken Ruins and the door at the Altar of Seals; inside are four sigils and a Reaper boss.

It holds about two to three hours of quests in Diamond Shores, all four classes, the first public PvP and the hidden Throne of Hinnon dungeon; housing and trade are not in it, and progress does not carry over to Early Access.

  • Platforms and Crossplay

ArcheAge Chronicles' Early Access is on PC through Steam only. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions were announced in Sep 2024 and their store pages are live, but no console date exists and crossplay has not been announced, as of Oct 20, 2026.

  • Price and Pay to Win

Progression Guides

  • Hersander's Tower

Hersander's Towers, hidden in every zone of ArcheAge Chronicles and named for Hersander, "the god of gambling", each ask in a riddle for an item. Satisfying every tower in a zone gives a unique accessory and unlocks the Hereafter Challenge, a timed fight against a random souped-up version of one of the zone's bosses, with a leaderboard of clear times (XL Games, Oct 15, 2026).

  • Progression and Traits

In ArcheAge Chronicles you level mostly from quests, discoveries and points of interest; each level gives stat points for six stats (Strength, Agility, Constitution, Intelligence, Talent, Endurance). Trait points come only from Raeven's Coilstones, each guarded by a boss, and every weapon has its own trait tree; Nui Tears raise max HP at Nui Statues, and field bosses and chests give gear.

Setup Guides

  • PC System Requirements

ArcheAge Chronicles needs at least Windows 10, an Intel Core i5-10400 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600, 16 GB of RAM, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER or AMD Radeon RX 6600 (8 GB) and 100 GB on an SSD, for 30 fps at 1080p on Low with upscaling on Quality. The recommended PC (Windows 11, Core i7-12700 or Ryzen 7 5700X, 32 GB, RTX 4060 Ti 16GB or RX 7700 XT) targets 60 fps at 1080p on High.

Overview

  • ArcheAge Chronicles

ArcheAge Chronicles is XL Games' open-world action MMORPG set in Auroria 50 years after the original ArcheAge, formerly announced as ArcheAge 2. A free Steam Next Fest demo runs Oct 19 to 26, 2026, and Early Access on Steam is planned for later in 2026 with no date announced, as of Oct 20, 2026.

  • Differences From ArcheAge

ArcheAge Chronicles is not ArcheAge 2 in XL Games' own words: it is a new game in the same universe set 50 years after the original, with action combat instead of tab targeting, smaller-group play instead of mass faction war, PvP by channel, housing zones instead of open-world land, four classes with weapon trait trees, and buy to play with a promise of no pay to win.

PvP

  • PvP

PvP in ArcheAge Chronicles is opt-in by channel. In standard channels nobody can attack you; in PvP channels anyone outside your party and guild can, you switch at a Nui Statue with a cooldown, and PvP channels give 10 to 15% bonus EXP on monster kills but no reward for killing players yet (XL Games, Oct 4, 2026).

Reception

  • Reception and Previews

As of Oct 20, 2026, ArcheAge Chronicles has no Steam user reviews and no reviews from major outlets, because it has not been released. Its free Steam Next Fest demo reached No. 1 on the festival's Top Demos chart on opening day and peaked at 20,507 players at once (SteamDB), while early press and creators are split between praise for the world and doubts about the combat's polish and depth.

  • Steam Player Count

ArcheAge Chronicles itself is not out, so it has no players yet; its free Steam Next Fest demo peaked at 20,507 concurrent players on Steam, its all-time high on SteamDB as read on Oct 20, 2026. Steam counted 5,856 players in the demo at 18:02 UTC that day.

Story

  • Story

In ArcheAge Chronicles you arrive in Auroria as an explorer of an established trading company, about 50 years after the original ArcheAge, and investigate a catastrophic airship crash and the intrigue around it, against a conflict between Auroria's settlers and the nations that want to keep it a colony. No story character has been officially named in English, as of Oct 20, 2026.

Systems

  • Crafting and Life Skills

ArcheAge Chronicles' life skills are hunting, gathering, farming, housing and crafting: you gather, process and craft what you need, learn recipes (some found in chests), and crafting feeds your character's growth and the player economy. The demo has gathering and potion cooking; XL Games has not published a list of professions, as of Oct 20, 2026.

  • Housing and Farming

Housing returns in ArcheAge Chronicles in dedicated housing zones split into channels, so every player can claim a home without the original ArcheAge's land rush; a claimed home stays in place for you and your neighbors, and interiors and exteriors can be customized. Housing is in Early Access but not in the demo, and farming is promised but not yet described, as of Oct 20, 2026.

  • Mounts and Sailing

Neither mounts nor ships are confirmed for ArcheAge Chronicles, as of Oct 20, 2026: the Early Access content list names no mounts, sailing or naval combat. You travel on foot, by glider and by swimming, and haul trade goods by wagon.

World

  • Auroria

Auroria is the land of ArcheAge Chronicles, the continent of the original ArcheAge's lore, rediscovered in "the Age of Pioneers" about 50 years after the original game. Early Access has three of its regions, Diamond Shores, Gylden Ruins and Astron Plains; the demo is set in Diamond Shores, and no full map has been published, as of Oct 20, 2026.

Photos
