PvP
PvP in ArcheAge Chronicles is opt-in by channel. In standard channels nobody can attack you; in PvP channels anyone outside your party and guild can, you switch at a Nui Statue with a cooldown, and PvP channels give 10 to 15% bonus EXP on monster kills but no reward for killing players yet (XL Games, Oct 4, 2026).
PvP in ArcheAge Chronicles is opt-in: every zone is split into channels of about 100 players, and only in PvP channels can other players attack you. XL Games set out the rules in its Steam post "Let's Talk PvP in ArcheAge Chronicles" of Oct 4, 2026: in standard channels "players can't attack each other at all"; in PvP channels "everyone else can attack you, except your party and guild members", in the same zone with the same monsters and quests. You switch at a Nui Statue, and a cooldown stops you from hopping "to safety the moment a fight turns against you". Azrial's breakdown of Oct 19, 2026 walks through the same rules and stresses that the 100 is the size of a channel, not a 100-player battle mode. The free Demo (Oct 19 to 26, 2026) is the first public build with PvP.

How PvP channels work
Each zone of Auroria runs as several copies, which XL Games calls channels. Global Project Manager Don wrote on Oct 4, 2026 that a typical channel holds about 100 players, that the servers could take more, and that the number is "a design choice" so the world feels "alive without feeling crowded". You do not pick a channel: the game places you, keeps a party together between zones, and lets you hop over to a friend's channel (more in Multiplayer and Guilds). Dungeons and some points of interest are instanced for you or your party alone, so nobody else can walk into them.
Two kinds of channels share each zone. A standard channel has no PvP at all; Creative Director and Lead Game Designer Jay Lee expects players who would rather quest and explore to "spend most of your time" there. A PvP channel is the same zone with PvP switched on for everyone except your party and guild members, so guildmates cannot attack each other. Switching happens only at a Nui Statue, the statues that also raise your maximum HP with Nui Tears, and the switch has a cooldown whose length XL Games has not published, as of Oct 20, 2026.
XL Games' own "PvP Gameplay #1" clip (Sep 4, 2026) shows the kind of fight the channels allow: a Warrior in blue runs out of a ruined temple and duels a red-clad player across a sunlit field of stones and orange flowers. The clip's description: "The Ranger throws an axe. The Warrior parries it, sending it straight back." Jay Lee revealed on Oct 4, 2026 that he played the Longsword Warrior in this footage and Executive Producer Yongjin Ham the Hatchet Ranger, and that parrying ranged attacks back was "one of the most fun parts". How parries work is on Combat.
Fights in a PvP channel do not stay one against one. XL Games' "PvP Gameplay #2" clip (Sep 4, 2026), described as "A chance encounter. A sudden fight. Then the allies showed up. Party PvP", opens on two fighters in a dry field and grows into a brawl of several players with bursts of fire and lightning, a fighter in a green skirt among them. Parties hold up to four players.
Why XL Games built it this way
Jay Lee explained the reasoning in the Oct 4, 2026 post. ArcheAge Chronicles is designed around each player's own adventure, so rather than "having players constantly running into fights they didn't ask for", XL Games lets players choose to meet others who want PvP. There are no set objectives or scheduled battles yet. The team started with "a few clear rules about who can fight whom, and a world to do it in", because "player-driven conflict (who controls a channel, who fights them for it, who teams up with whom) was worth more than anything we could script ourselves."
The direction goes back to 2024. In XL Games' developer diary video of Oct 10, 2024 (Korean speech with English subtitles), a developer says the game puts a lot of care into PvE, varied fights with monsters, but that does not mean there is no PvP: if fighting monsters is fun, PvP will be just as fun. A year later, in an Aug 1, 2025 interview with Massively OP, XL Games said PvP "is no longer the centerpiece" and "This isn't a return to AA1-style massive faction wars or open ganking zones."
Rewards, the kill log and achievements
The only reward for now is experience. Killing monsters in a PvP channel gives 10 to 15% bonus EXP "since you're taking on some extra risk", but monster kills are only a small part of the EXP you earn in the open world (most comes from quests and discoveries, see Progression and Traits), so XL Games calls the overall boost "modest" and is still tuning the numbers. Killing another player gives nothing: "We held off on rewards while we get the basics right." Azrial points out that the bonus applies to monster kills only, so it does not mean leveling 10 to 15% faster overall, and that it loses its pull once you stop leveling.
The demo adds a kill log and PvP achievements "so your wins don't go unnoticed". Rankings and trophies "will likely come sometime after launch as part of our live updates", Jay Lee wrote, adding: "It's really about bragging rights. We don't want PvP to turn into an economic race." No date is attached to rankings, as of Oct 20, 2026.
PvP in the demo
The Steam Next Fest demo is the first public build with PvP. Ham said in his video of Oct 7, 2026 (Korean speech with English subtitles) that the demo adds a new dungeon and PvP to what the Network Test offered. Ham's Steam letter of Oct 18, 2026 says that normally PvP channels open only after you finish the early part of the game, but for the demo the requirement was lowered: "Once you leave the first town and reach the Nui Statue at your next destination, you can enter a PvP channel." (XL Games' earlier posts of Oct 4 and Oct 15 said PvP channels would be open "from the start"; the Oct 18 letter is the latest word.) All four classes are playable with two weapons each, so you can test several setups against other players; see Classes.
The Network Test of Sep 12, 2026 had none of this. Ser Medieval reported in his review of Sep 14, 2026 that the test "did not have any PvP as far as we saw" and guessed at a flagging system; the channel rules came three weeks later.
Ideas that are not promises
XL Games has talked about more structured PvP built around trade, and has said plainly that it is not a promise. Jay Lee wrote on Oct 4, 2026: "Think trade runs through PvP channels, and guilds fighting to take and hold trade posts," then "This is early planning and still needs a lot of tweaking, so please don't read it as a promise." Azrial, discussing the post, likes the idea of guilds escorting a delivery but asks what a trader would risk and what an attacker would gain, details the post does not give. How trading works today is on Trade Runs; trade is not in the demo.
Older statements point in the same direction but are not current plans. XL Games' written developer diary of Oct 10, 2024 said trade runs would make "PvP encounters become more likely as the stakes of the journey increase", and mentioned an "evolved crime system" and arenas "like the colosseum". In an Aug 1, 2025 Q&A with Wccftech, XL Games said players could "expect structured formats like arenas, battlegrounds, or zone-based competitive events". The Oct 4, 2026 post describes open PvP channels instead, and no arena, battleground or crime system has been confirmed, as of Oct 20, 2026.
No sieges, castles or faction war
ArcheAge Chronicles has no sieges, castles, territory control or faction war, as of Oct 20, 2026. XL Games told Wccftech on Aug 1, 2025 that "large-scale PvP or territorial conquest, didn't translate well to our new direction", and that "the chaotic, large-scale open-world PvP and siege warfare of AA1 just didn't fit the design". Its first letter at the Sep 24, 2024 reveal already described "shifting away from large-scale competitive battles to smaller group activities". Housing is in dedicated zones rather than contested open land, with no player-built cities. The fullest comparison with the original game is on Differences From ArcheAge.
Griefing
Griefing was raised after the Network Test. In his Steam letter of Sep 15, 2026, Ham listed fixes for "various methods players are using to grief other players" among the work in progress, with a black screen issue and the party interface, and said improvements would come in later builds. XL Games has not listed which methods were fixed, as of Oct 20, 2026. The switching cooldown at Nui Statues is meant, in Jay Lee's words, to stop players hopping to safety mid-fight; Azrial reads it as a guard against griefing too.
Frequently asked questions
Is PvP forced in ArcheAge Chronicles? No. PvP in ArcheAge Chronicles happens only in PvP channels you choose to enter at a Nui Statue; in standard channels players cannot attack each other at all (XL Games, Oct 4, 2026).
Can I be ganked in ArcheAge Chronicles? Only if you are in a PvP channel, where anyone outside your party and guild can attack you. In ArcheAge Chronicles' standard channels nobody can attack you, and a cooldown on switching channels means a fight in a PvP channel cannot be escaped instantly.
Can guildmates attack each other in ArcheAge Chronicles? No. ArcheAge Chronicles' PvP channels let everyone attack you except your party and guild members.
Are there sieges or faction wars in ArcheAge Chronicles? No. XL Games dropped the original ArcheAge's large-scale PvP, siege warfare and territorial conquest, and ArcheAge Chronicles has no sieges, castles or faction war announced, as of Oct 20, 2026.
What do I get for PvP in ArcheAge Chronicles? ArcheAge Chronicles' PvP channels give 10 to 15% bonus EXP on monster kills, plus a kill log and PvP achievements; killing players gives no reward yet, and rankings and trophies are likely to come after launch (XL Games, Oct 4, 2026).
Is there PvP in the ArcheAge Chronicles demo? Yes. The ArcheAge Chronicles Steam Next Fest demo (Oct 19 to 26, 2026) is the first public build with PvP; you can enter a PvP channel once you leave the first town and reach the Nui Statue at your next destination.
How many players are in an ArcheAge Chronicles PvP channel? A typical ArcheAge Chronicles channel holds about 100 players, varying by area, and that applies to PvP channels too; it is the population of a copy of the zone, not a 100-player battle mode.

ArcheAge ChroniclesArcheAge Chronicles is XL Games' open-world action MMORPG set in Auroria 50 years after the original ArcheAge, formerly announced as ArcheAge 2. A free Steam Next Fest demo runs Oct 19 to 26, 2026, and Early Access on Steam is planned for later in 2026 with no date announced, as of Oct 20, 2026. -
DemoThe free ArcheAge Chronicles demo runs on Steam from Oct 19, 10:00 AM to Oct 26, 10:00 AM PDT, 2026 (Oct 20 to 27 in Korea), worldwide and with no sign-up. It holds about two to three hours of quests in Diamond Shores, all four classes, the first public PvP and the hidden Throne of Hinnon dungeon; housing and trade are not in it, and progress does not carry over to Early Access.

AuroriaAuroria is the land of ArcheAge Chronicles, the continent of the original ArcheAge's lore, rediscovered in "the Age of Pioneers" about 50 years after the original game. Early Access has three of its regions, Diamond Shores, Gylden Ruins and Astron Plains; the demo is set in Diamond Shores, and no full map has been published, as of Oct 20, 2026. -
Multiplayer and GuildsArcheAge Chronicles is an always-online game you can play solo or with others. Zones are split into channels of about 100 players, parties hold up to four, guilds and "company" activities are in Early Access, and the demo runs servers in five locations (North America East and West, Europe Central, Asia East and South). -
CombatArcheAge Chronicles uses action combat, not tab targeting: light and heavy attacks, dodges, rolls, blocks and parries on a stamina bar, two weapons you swap between in a fight, and skills reached through button combinations instead of a hotbar of dozens of slots. Ranged attacks can be parried straight back at the attacker. -
Progression and TraitsIn ArcheAge Chronicles you level mostly from quests, discoveries and points of interest; each level gives stat points for six stats (Strength, Agility, Constitution, Intelligence, Talent, Endurance). Trait points come only from Raeven's Coilstones, each guarded by a boss, and every weapon has its own trait tree; Nui Tears raise max HP at Nui Statues, and field bosses and chests give gear.
