Progression and Traits

In ArcheAge Chronicles you level mostly from quests, discoveries and points of interest; each level gives stat points for six stats (Strength, Agility, Constitution, Intelligence, Talent, Endurance). Trait points come only from Raeven's Coilstones, each guarded by a boss, and every weapon has its own trait tree; Nui Tears raise max HP at Nui Statues, and field bosses and chests give gear.

ArcheAge Chronicles splits getting stronger into two tracks: your level gives stat points, and bosses give trait points. You earn most EXP from quests, discoveries and points of interest rather than from killing monsters; each level gives stat points to place freely among six stats (Strength, Agility, Constitution, Intelligence, Talent and Endurance); trait points come only from Raeven's Coilstones, each sitting near a powerful boss, and every weapon has its own trait tree. Nui Tears found in the world raise your maximum HP when brought to a Nui Statue, and field bosses and chests give gear, accessories and recipes. XL Games' Global Project Manager Don laid this out on Oct 15, 2026. FrozenCloud saw it in the September Network Test: progression is "skill and loot" (beat mobs and bosses, get better gear, level up), but the "reven call stones", as the captions spell Raeven's Coilstones, are "the bigger deal", because breaking them by killing bosses grants the trait points you need "to unlock a weapon's full potential". He also got three stat points per level and put two into his main stat and one into stamina.

Quick facts

EXP Some from monsters; most from quests, discoveries and points of interest
Stats Strength, Agility, Constitution, Intelligence, Talent, Endurance
Stat points Every level; one point always buys one stat
Trait points Only from Raeven's Coilstones, each near a boss
Trait trees One per weapon type; nodes add stats, new skills or change skills
Max HP Nui Tears handed in at Nui Statues; each step costs more tears
Gear Field bosses (including accessories), chests, quests
Hereafter Challenge Timed, leaderboard boss fight after every Hersander's Tower in a zone
Max level Not announced (Oct 20, 2026)
Respec Not announced (Oct 20, 2026)

Levels and EXP

Your level works the way you would expect: you start at level 1, earn EXP and level up at each threshold. What is different is where the EXP comes from. "Defeating monsters gives you some EXP, but most of it comes from questing, finding things out in the world, and completing points of interest," Don writes, aiming for a steady, predictable rate as you clear each part of the open world. Monster kills in PvP channels give 10 to 15% bonus EXP, but since kills are a small share of the total the overall boost is modest (XL Games, Oct 4, 2026; PvP). Don's summary of the design: "Progression should never feel like a chore. Exploring makes you better in a fight, and being better in a fight lets you push further into the world."

The six stats

Every level gives stat points, and you choose where they go. Ser Medieval was surprised to find "an attribute point system" in the Network Test (he lists strength, agility, intelligence, talent and endurance). XL Games' Oct 15, 2026 post gives all six and what each does:

Strength Physical attack
Agility Critical hit chance, plus some physical attack
Constitution HP and resistance to critical hits
Intelligence Magic attack
Endurance Stamina and defense
Talent Supports magic attack, and lets you use better equipment without penalties

"One point always buys one stat, no matter how high that stat already is," Don writes, so there is no math before you commit, and the character screen previews how attack power, critical chance and the rest will change before you lock anything in. Because dodges and attacks spend stamina, Endurance matters to every class; see Combat.

Traits and trait trees

Traits decide how your character fights, and each weapon has its own tree. In Don's words, "as a Fighter, your longsword tree and your greatsword tree are completely separate". Most nodes are small stat boosts along a path; others give the weapon brand new skills, and some change how an existing skill plays. His example is the Warrior's Greatsword: one player takes the damage branch, unlocking Armor Break and turning Sunder into Sweeping Slash, which hits twice with a broader cleave; another takes the defensive branch for Pummel Strike, an attack usable while guarding that grants a damage-absorbing shield. Points were scarce in the Network Test: FrozenCloud says trait points "were very limited", so he could really invest in only one weapon's tree, and the deeper combos (like the Mage's charged spell that can be saved and recast instantly) sit behind them. He worries the second weapon slot becomes "dead weight" unless players get enough points for both. XL Games says point costs and tree layouts "will likely evolve based on player feedback". Each class's two weapons are on Classes.

Early in development, everything hung off your level, stats and traits alike. XL Games split trait points off "entirely" because, Don writes, "we didn't want to be just another MMO where the answer to every tough fight is to go level up."

Raeven's Coilstones

Trait points come from Raeven's Coilstones, and "every one of them sits near a powerful boss". Some of those bosses are out in the open, some hidden, and some appear only through certain quests: if you have found a Coilstone, there is a fight between you and it. That is why exploring and boss fights are the heart of progression, and why Don's model player who keeps dying to a boss goes off to explore, spends the trait points found along the way, and comes back to win. Field bosses are on Bosses.

Nui Tears and Nui Statues

Nui Tears are "tucked all over the open world", and bringing them to a Nui Statue raises your maximum HP. The first few increases take only a handful of tears and each later one a few more, so it is something you build over the whole journey, not in an afternoon (XL Games, Oct 15, 2026). Ser Medieval found in the Network Test that the statues, which you unlock around the world, also serve as fast-travel points, and that the blessing from Nui Tears "looked to increase just your maximum HP" in the early stages. Statues are also where you switch channels; see Beginner's Guide.

Gear, chests and tempering

Gear is the third track. XL Games says field bosses, "a clear step up from the monsters around them", drop gear including accessories, plus crafting materials found nowhere else; treasure chests hold gear and rare crafting recipes and open once per character, so you never race other players to them. Azrial noticed in the Network Test that gear changed how the fight felt: stamina became "less restrictive as you progressed" because some gear raised your stamina, so you could dodge more. Materials feed Crafting and Life Skills.

Equipment can be tempered. Ser Medieval saw the option at a blacksmith in the Network Test and hopes failed tempering only downgrades gear and never destroys it, worrying that breakable gear would invite paid protection items later. XL Games has not described tempering, its odds or what failure does, as of Oct 20, 2026. Executive Producer Yongjin Ham has promised that ArcheAge Chronicles will never sell pay-to-win items (Price and Pay to Win).

Hersander's Tower and the Hereafter Challenge

Every zone hides a set of Hersander's Towers. Hersander is "the god of gambling", and each tower asks, in a riddle, for an item. Satisfying every one in a zone gives a unique accessory and unlocks the Hereafter Challenge: a timed fight against "a random souped-up version" of one of the zone's bosses, with clear times on a leaderboard. Don calls it the moment progression is tested "with the difficulty turned all the way up". Full details on Hersander's Tower; dungeons such as Throne of Hinnon are another test of a build.

Max level

XL Games has not published a level cap for Early Access or for the demo, as of Oct 20, 2026. Before the demo, Ser Medieval guessed its maximum "might be higher than seven this time" (the Network Test's apparent ceiling) because XL Games called the new dungeon high-level, and he notes that the demo sends you back to character selection at the end of its area instead of kicking you from the game. In his Oct 20, 2026 guide to Throne of Hinnon he recommends being at least around level 8 or 9 for it and says he is level 11 himself, so the demo goes at least that high. Demo progress does not carry over to Early Access.
