Mage
The Mage in ArcheAge Chronicles casts fire and lightning at range with the Elemental Staff, whose Retain mechanic stores spells to recast without incantation and builds Energy Core toward Shooting Star, or fights in melee with frost through the Wavesword (Tidal Rend, Thundersnow). There is no healing weapon at Early Access.
The Mage in ArcheAge Chronicles casts fire and lightning at range with the Elemental Staff, or fights in melee with frost through the Wavesword. The Staff's Retain mechanic stores spells you have cast so you can recast them without incantation, and each retained cast builds Energy Core; at 10 stacks you can call down Shooting Star. The Wavesword lunges in with Tidal Rend and surrounds you with the blizzard of Thundersnow, both building Freeze. These are the skills in MMORPG.com's report of XL Games' class reveal (Sep 17, 2026). In his class guide of Oct 5, 2026, Azrial calls the Mage the best example of how much weapon choice changes a class. Its lore hero is Aranzeb, "the last king of the elves". It is one of four Classes.

Elemental Staff
The Elemental Staff is the traditional caster's weapon: fire and lightning at range, and charged spells that spread their effects over wider areas. MMORPG.com calls Retain the Staff's "true power": retained spells are reused without incantations, allowing fast chains, and using them builds Energy Core, which at 10 stacks unlocks Shooting Star for massive area damage. Wall of Fire raises a wall of flame that damages and staggers enemies in range and raises their Burn gauge. Azrial's summary of the loop: cast your spells, retain the important ones, build Energy Core, then choose when to release the big burst.
FrozenCloud, reviewing the Network Test on Sep 14, 2026, described the same chain: charge an attack, save it, recast it instantly, and unleash an enhanced version once a gauge fills, though only after spending trait points to unlock it. He warned that the game's stamina-based combat and enemies' unblockable red attacks make timing matter most for charge-based kits like the Mage's.
Anders' 4K capture of the Network Test build (Sep 14, 2026) shows the Mage with the Elemental Staff against the Herald Knight, an early boss of that test: a towering knight in purple-lit armor, with a boss bar, in a ruined hall carpeted with red leaves, while the Mage keeps her distance and a list of the staff's combos stays on screen. It is an old build with a "Network Test" watermark.
Wavesword
The Wavesword turns the Mage into a melee fighter with fast sword attacks, movement and frost. Tidal Rend lunges forward and strikes an enemy three times, then, with enough stacks, strikes again with three area attacks, inflicting Freeze; Thundersnow summons a blizzard around you that damages enemies and raises their Freeze gauge. Azrial calls it the Mage's spellblade option, controlling the battlefield from inside instead of outside, and says it feels "like a new class all together". MMORPG.com's headline calls this weapon a "Thundersword", but its article describes the Wavesword, and no weapon by that name is announced.
Ser Medieval (Sep 14, 2026) described the Wavesword as a spell-sword style that strengthens freezing to immobilize enemies or attacks through sword afterimages, and FrozenCloud said it has a guard stance and plays "more like a bruiser". Ser Medieval also ranked the Mage last of the four classes for himself, while saying every class felt good.
Traits
Each Mage weapon has its own trait tree: XL Games wrote on Oct 15, 2026 that "every weapon type has its own trait tree", and that some nodes change how an existing skill plays out. Retain chains and enhanced casts sit deep in the Staff's tree, so the scarce trait points of the Network Test held the class back for FrozenCloud. Trait points come from Raeven's Coilstones, each guarded by a boss, not from levels; one stat, Talent, supports magic attack. See Progression and Traits.
Healing and the third weapon
ArcheAge Chronicles has no healing weapon at Early Access, as of Oct 20, 2026: neither the Elemental Staff nor the Wavesword heals allies. XL Games has promised a third weapon for every class without naming them. Creators saw a third Mage weapon on the Network Test character screen, locked, and read it as a Vitality Staff; Azrial says its tree leans on healing, debuffing enemies and spending your own HP on some abilities, and Ser Medieval called it "a healer". That is a creator's reading of a test build, and it is not in the demo.
In groups
Mages fight alongside up to three others in Dungeons, which XL Games says can also be soloed, and in open-world fights against field Bosses. With no healer, a party's survival rests on dodging, parrying and the Mage's crowd control: Wall of Fire's stagger and the Wavesword's Freeze. Azrial wondered whether the third weapons, the Vitality Staff and the Berserker's Greatshield, could push the game toward clearer group roles, which XL Games has not described.
Which Mage weapon to start with
Azrial's advice in his demo guide of Oct 12, 2026: the Staff gives you ranged elemental spells, while the Wavesword takes the Mage into close-range magic and frost attacks, so a player who likes magic but does not want to stand at the back the whole time should try it. Because the Mage carries both and swaps in Combat, you can open with spells and finish with the sword.
Gender
The Mage is female only at Early Access, as Ser Medieval reported from the Network Test on Sep 14, 2026; XL Games has not stated each class's gender in writing. XL Games says classes stay gender-locked at Early Access and that more gender options will come later, "starting with select classes", with no date as of Oct 20, 2026. See Character Creation and Gender Lock.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a healer in ArcheAge Chronicles? ArcheAge Chronicles has no healing weapon at Early Access, as of Oct 20, 2026. Creators saw a locked Vitality Staff for the Mage on the Network Test screen, but XL Games has not announced it.
Should I use the Elemental Staff or the Wavesword in ArcheAge Chronicles? In ArcheAge Chronicles, the Elemental Staff suits players who want fire and lightning at range, chaining retained spells toward Shooting Star, and the Wavesword suits players who want a melee spellblade with frost. The Mage carries both and swaps in combat.
Is the Mage female only in ArcheAge Chronicles? A creator reported from the Sep 2026 Network Test that the ArcheAge Chronicles Mage is female only. XL Games keeps classes gender-locked at Early Access and plans more gender options later, starting with select classes.
Is the Mage good solo in ArcheAge Chronicles? The ArcheAge Chronicles Mage can solo: dungeons can be taken on alone, and the Wavesword gives it a melee option with a guard stance when enemies close in. Creators found the Staff's charged spells demanding, since enemies hit hard and stamina limits dodging.
What is the Thundersword in ArcheAge Chronicles? There is no Thundersword in ArcheAge Chronicles: the name appears only in an MMORPG.com headline, and the article itself describes the Mage's melee weapon, the Wavesword.

ArcheAge ChroniclesArcheAge Chronicles is XL Games' open-world action MMORPG set in Auroria 50 years after the original ArcheAge, formerly announced as ArcheAge 2. A free Steam Next Fest demo runs Oct 19 to 26, 2026, and Early Access on Steam is planned for later in 2026 with no date announced, as of Oct 20, 2026. -
ClassesArcheAge Chronicles has four classes, Warrior, Ranger, Berserker and Mage, each with two weapons at Early Access (eight in all) and a third weapon per class planned. You swap between your two weapons in combat, and every weapon has its own trait tree. -
Progression and TraitsIn ArcheAge Chronicles you level mostly from quests, discoveries and points of interest; each level gives stat points for six stats (Strength, Agility, Constitution, Intelligence, Talent, Endurance). Trait points come only from Raeven's Coilstones, each guarded by a boss, and every weapon has its own trait tree; Nui Tears raise max HP at Nui Statues, and field bosses and chests give gear.
-
DungeonsArcheAge Chronicles dungeons are instanced just for you or your party of up to four, share quest progress inside, and can be soloed (XL Games, Oct 15, 2026). Raids are on the Early Access content list, but their size has not been announced as of Oct 20, 2026. -
BossesArcheAge Chronicles has field bosses that roam the open world and drop gear and unique crafting materials, bosses that guard Raeven's Coilstones (the source of trait points), dungeon bosses, story bosses, and a timed, souped-up boss fight with a leaderboard in each zone's Hereafter Challenge (XL Games, Oct 15, 2026). -
CombatArcheAge Chronicles uses action combat, not tab targeting: light and heavy attacks, dodges, rolls, blocks and parries on a stamina bar, two weapons you swap between in a fight, and skills reached through button combinations instead of a hotbar of dozens of slots. Ranged attacks can be parried straight back at the attacker.
