Character Creation and Gender Lock

In ArcheAge Chronicles you can take a pre-made character or build your own with detailed sliders, but each class is locked to one gender, and XL Games says that stays at Early Access; more gender options are in development, "starting with select classes". No playable races have been announced, as of Oct 20, 2026.

ArcheAge Chronicles lets you pick a pre-made character or create your own with detailed sliders, but every class is locked to one gender, and XL Games has confirmed the lock stays in place when Early Access begins. Executive Producer Yongjin Ham wrote on Sep 15, 2026 that "at the time of Early Access, the current gender-locked class system will remain in place"; on Oct 18, 2026 he added that "development is now underway" on more gender options, to be introduced "gradually, starting with select classes, rather than for all classes at once", and not in time for the free Demo. Ser Medieval, reviewing the September Network Test on Sep 14, 2026, found the creator itself "great", with a lot of detail "on par with games like Black Desert Online": body and face sliders and choices for hair and tattoos. He also reported which gender each class is: the Warrior and Berserker male only, the Ranger and Mage female only. XL Games has not stated that split in writing, as of Oct 20, 2026, so treat it as his report from a test build. No playable races have been announced.

The character creator

The creator goes into fine detail. FrozenCloud, who also played the Network Test, calls character creation "surprisingly detailed": you can customize "everything from skin and hair to makeup and even your character's teeth", along with body sliders. Ser Medieval adds two caveats from the same build: the range of choices was "not a huge degree", and some tattoos and other touches did not show in the creator but did appear once the character entered the game, a bug. In the demo, MeinMMO found that the character selection offers ready-made characters as well, for players who would rather start right away (Oct 20, 2026). XL Games itself has not described the creator in detail, as of Oct 20, 2026.

Picking a class at creation

Your class is chosen when you create the character, and it sets both your gender and your first weapon. Ser Medieval noticed in the Network Test that whichever weapon style you picked in the creator, the game started you with the class's base weapon: the Longsword for the Warrior, the Axe for the Berserker, the Hatchet for the Ranger and the Elemental Staff for the Mage. After the tutorial each class received its second weapon: the Greatsword, Warhammer, Longbow and Wavesword. The four classes and their weapons are compared on Classes, with a page each for the Warrior, Ranger, Berserker and Mage.

Gender-locked classes

All four classes are gender-locked. FrozenCloud says it in one line of his Sep 14, 2026 review ("Warrior, ranger, berserker, and mage. All gender locked."), and it was one of the loudest complaints after the Network Test: Ham listed gender-locked classes among the feedback XL Games received, alongside black screens, the party interface and griefing. His Sep 15, 2026 letter says XL Games aims "to give players the freedom to choose their character's gender", but that its priority for Early Access is refining combat and class design, so the lock remains. Massively OP noted at the time that this was not a promise to change it later. Ser Medieval expects backlash but compares it to other Korean games that launched in the West with gender locks and removed them later. Whether you can play a male Mage or a female Warrior today depends on that split, which only creators have reported.

What is coming

XL Games changed course a month later. Ham's Oct 18, 2026 letter says that after "even more feedback", development of additional gender options "is now underway", rolled out "gradually, starting with select classes, rather than for all classes at once", and not ready for the demo. The Early Access FAQ on Steam lists the same goal among the changes planned before full release: "Gradually introduce additional gender option for classes, starting with select classes." Ser Medieval reads that line in his Oct 18, 2026 video and asks XL Games for a free gender change token when it arrives. XL Games has not said which classes come first, when, or whether existing characters can switch, as of Oct 20, 2026. Early Access is expected to last about 9 to 12 months; see Release Date and Early Access.

Races

XL Games has not announced any playable races for ArcheAge Chronicles, as of Oct 20, 2026: the Early Access FAQ, the store page and every official post describe four classes and their weapons, but no race choice. The original ArcheAge had races; none of them is announced for Chronicles, and lists of races or race-locked classes on fan sites are not official. How the game differs from the 2013 original is on Differences From ArcheAge.

Outfits and looks

Gear does not change how your character looks. Ser Medieval found in the Network Test that equipping new armor left the outfit unchanged; separate cosmetic items in your inventory set the look instead. He hopes the best-looking outfits will not end up in a cash shop. Ham has said there will be no paid shop at the start of Early Access, and that if one opens later XL Games will announce its contents in advance and never sell pay-to-win items (Oct 7, 2026); see Price and Pay to Win.

Frequently asked questions

Each class in ArcheAge Chronicles is locked to one gender, and Executive Producer Yongjin Ham wrote on Sep 15, 2026 that the lock remains at Early Access. XL Games said on Oct 18, 2026 that more gender options are in development, starting with select classes.

Can I play a male Mage in ArcheAge Chronicles? Not in the demo or the Network Test: Ser Medieval reports the Mage and Ranger as female only and the Warrior and Berserker as male only. XL Games has not confirmed the split or said which classes get other genders first, as of Oct 20, 2026.

What races are there in ArcheAge Chronicles? None have been announced. XL Games describes ArcheAge Chronicles only by its four classes, Warrior, Ranger, Berserker and Mage, with no race choice named as of Oct 20, 2026.

Can I make my own character in ArcheAge Chronicles? Yes. ArcheAge Chronicles lets you choose a pre-made character or create your own, with sliders for body and face and options for hair, makeup, tattoos and teeth, as creators and MeinMMO describe it.

Can I change my character's appearance later in ArcheAge Chronicles? XL Games has not announced an appearance or gender change option for ArcheAge Chronicles, as of Oct 20, 2026. Outfits are set by separate cosmetic items rather than by your gear.
