Differences From ArcheAge
ArcheAge Chronicles is not ArcheAge 2 in XL Games' own words: it is a new game in the same universe set 50 years after the original, with action combat instead of tab targeting, smaller-group play instead of mass faction war, PvP by channel, housing zones instead of open-world land, four classes with weapon trait trees, and buy to play with a promise of no pay to win.
ArcheAge Chronicles is not ArcheAge 2, in XL Games' own words: it is a new game in the ArcheAge universe, set in Auroria about 50 years after the original, that XL Games calls neither a direct sequel nor a reboot. It was announced as ArcheAge 2 in 2022 and renamed on Sep 24, 2024. Against the original ArcheAge (2013), it trades tab-target combat for action combat, mass faction war for smaller-group play, open PvP for PvP channels you opt into, open-world land for housing zones, and the original's mix-and-match skillsets for four classes with weapon trait trees, and it is buy to play with a promise never to sell power. Trade, housing, farming, crafting and gliders return. In XL Games' "Developer Diary - Our Vision" video (Oct 10, 2024), a developer says (in Korean, with English subtitles) that Chronicles is less a simple sequel than an attempt to reinvent ArcheAge for this era, with new game design for a new age, and that the title "Chronicles" fit that direction. The game itself is introduced on ArcheAge Chronicles.

From ArcheAge 2 to ArcheAge Chronicles
The game began as a sequel. Kakao Games showed ArcheAge 2 at G-Star in Busan on Nov 17, 2022, and in its interview video the next day Jake Song, then head of XL Games, calls it (in Korean) the sequel to ArcheAge, a seamless open-world action MMORPG for PC and consoles that shares the original's world but not its story. At Sony's State of Play on Sep 24, 2024 it returned as ArcheAge Chronicles, and Executive Producer Yongjin Ham wrote: "In lieu of a direct sequel, we've prepared a fresh take on the ArcheAge universe by shifting away from large-scale competitive battles to smaller group activities." The Oct 10, 2024 diary explains the name: it tells "untapped stories from different perspectives in the same era". Ham's Jul 31, 2025 letter is the plainest: "We didn't want to just do a sequel. We didn't want to reboot what came before," and "this isn't ArcheAge 2." Song left XL Games in early 2025. Press reports still often call it a sequel. The full timeline is on Development History.
What stays: "ArcheAge DNA"
Trade, housing and crafting are what XL Games keeps from the original. In "A Quick Look at Auroria" (Sep 7, 2026) the developers drive a wagon past trading posts and say: "Housing, crafting, trade. This is ArcheAge DNA." XL Games told Massively OP in 2025 that it draws "heavily from its systems-driven design: housing, trade routes, lifeskills, and player economy", each reimagined for solo and social play. Gliders return too, along with the setting: Auroria is the continent of the original's lore, and the classes nod to its heroes. Each system has its page: Trade Runs, Housing and Farming, Crafting and Life Skills and Exploration and Gliders.
What changes
The biggest change is the aim: exploration and cooperation rather than competition. In "The Direction the Devs Are Taking" (Oct 7, 2026), Ham says (in Korean, with English subtitles) that the team wanted an MMORPG led by exploration and cooperation rather than competition, where wandering the world alone is fun and meeting others by chance, helping or being helped, happens naturally. The changes that follow:
- Combat. The original used tab targeting; Chronicles is action combat "built from scratch with combo-driven mechanics, dodges, and some really satisfying weapon-specific skills" (Ham, 2025), with blocking and parrying, and abilities on modifiers "not through managing dozens of ability slots" (XL Games to Wccftech, 2025). See Combat.
- Classes. The original let you combine three of ten skillsets into 120 classes. Chronicles has four classes, Warrior, Ranger, Berserker and Mage, each with two weapons at Early Access and a third planned, and every weapon has its own trait tree (Oct 15, 2026). See Classes.
- Scale and PvP. Mass faction war and "territorial conquest" are gone; XL Games said in 2025 they "didn't translate well to our new direction". PvP now lives in PvP channels of about 100 players that you enter at a Nui Statue, while standard channels have none (Oct 4, 2026). See PvP.
- Housing. Homes move from open-world plots to housing zones with channels, to end "land sniping" (2025).
- Progression. Most experience comes from quests and discovery, and trait points come from bosses guarding Raeven's Coilstones, not from levels (Oct 15, 2026). See Progression and Traits.
- Ships. The original's naval warfare has no confirmed counterpart; see Mounts and Sailing.
Pay to win. The original's Western releases carried a pay-to-win reputation, which MeinMMO still cites as a source of fan doubt (Oct 20, 2026). Chronicles is a buy-to-play game, Ham says in the same video, and it will never sell items that make you stronger or speed up growth; there will be no paid shop when Early Access starts, and if one opens later, what it sells and when will be announced in advance. The price is not announced, as of Oct 20, 2026. See Price and Pay to Win.
Not a traditional MMORPG, then an MMORPG
XL Games' label for the game has moved. In 2024 and 2025 it called Chronicles an "online action RPG" and "not a traditional MMORPG"; XL Games told Massively OP in Aug 2025 to "Think of it as a hybrid of games like Zelda: Breath of the Wild and ArcheAge," built around "a rich, single-player-driven adventure", and told Wccftech that "Chronicles isn't trying to be ArcheAge 1.5." In 2026 the official site calls it an "Open World Action MMORPG", and the Steam Early Access FAQ says: "As an MMO, ArcheAge Chronicles truly comes to life when players come together." Ham's Oct 7, 2026 summary is "an action MMORPG built on an open world". The 2026 label is the current one.
ArcheAge S is a different game
ArcheAge S: Strait of Freedom is a separate PC MMORPG, not Chronicles. It is led by Kim Kyung-tae, the original's first planning lead, published by Kakao Games and targeting 2027; on Sep 8, 2026 XL Games disclosed the sale of the ArcheAge IP and the ArcheAge S project to Align Studio, with the transfer dated Oct 27, 2026, while the Chronicles project stays with XL Games. Game Rant (Oct 4, 2026) describes ArcheAge S as following the 2014 Western release more closely, while Chronicles leans "into the third-person action RPG genre rather than a hardcore MMO title". The original servers are closed: the Western ones on Jun 27, 2024 and Korea's on Mar 6, 2025. The whole family, including ArcheAge: Unchained and ArcheAge War, is on ArcheAge Series.
What players and press say
Reviewers of the test builds describe Chronicles as a different kind of game from the original. Ser Medieval, after the Network Test (Sep 14, 2026), answers whether it is "a proper successor": "I would say this is more of your Crimson Desert, but in the ArcheAge universe," aimed at the action RPG market and at consoles, and he expects ArcheAge S to be the closer successor. MeinMMO (Oct 20, 2026) writes that Chronicles "is not supposed to be a sandbox MMORPG with a lot of freedom and a focus on trading, housing, and PvP," and that many fans of the original dislike that, while its reviewer prefers the new approach. Kyunghyang Games (Oct 20, 2026) found the demo closer to a hardcore Western PvP MMORPG than to the sandbox original, and expects fans to want an explanation. More reactions are on Reception and Previews.
What the test builds lacked is exactly what made the original. Azrial, in his Network Test review (Sep 14, 2026), asks whether XL Games can "build ArcheAge around this foundation," noting that "A lot of the systems people associate most with ArcheAge weren't part of this test": housing, farming, trade runs, the player-driven economy and naval combat. The demo also leaves out housing and trade; both are on the Early Access list.
Frequently asked questions
Is ArcheAge Chronicles ArcheAge 2? No. ArcheAge Chronicles was announced as ArcheAge 2 in 2022, but XL Games renamed it in 2024 and says "this isn't ArcheAge 2": it is a new game in the same universe, set 50 years after the original, neither a direct sequel nor a reboot.
Is ArcheAge Chronicles a sandbox MMORPG? Not in the original's sense. ArcheAge Chronicles keeps trade, housing and crafting but drops open-world land, faction war and territorial conquest, and XL Games calls it an open-world action MMORPG focused on exploration and smaller groups.
Is ArcheAge Chronicles tab target? No. ArcheAge Chronicles uses action combat with light and heavy attacks, dodges, blocks and parries, not the original ArcheAge's tab targeting.
Is ArcheAge Chronicles pay to win like ArcheAge? XL Games says ArcheAge Chronicles will never sell pay-to-win items: it is buy to play, with no paid shop when Early Access starts (Ham, Oct 7, 2026). The price has not been announced, as of Oct 20, 2026.
Do I need to play ArcheAge before ArcheAge Chronicles? No. ArcheAge Chronicles tells a new story 50 years after the original and is meant for newcomers and veterans alike, and the original ArcheAge's Western and Korean servers have closed.
Is ArcheAge Chronicles the same as ArcheAge S? No. ArcheAge S: Strait of Freedom is a separate MMORPG led by Kim Kyung-tae and targeting 2027, while ArcheAge Chronicles is XL Games' open-world action MMORPG with Early Access planned for later in 2026 (Kakao Games has said Q4 2026); no date has been announced, as of Oct 20, 2026.

A free Steam Next Fest demo runs Oct 19 to 26, 2026, and Early Access on Steam is planned for later in 2026 with no date announced, as of Oct 20, 2026. -
Development HistoryArcheAge Chronicles is made by XL Games in South Korea. It began as ArcheAge 2 (made official in 2020, first shown at G-Star on Nov 17, 2022), was renamed ArcheAge Chronicles at Sony's State of Play on Sep 24, 2024, missed every release window from 2024 on, and has been self-published by XL Games since 2026. Early Access on Steam is planned for later in 2026, with no date announced as of Oct 20, 2026. -
Trade RunsTrade runs return in ArcheAge Chronicles: you make trade goods and haul them by Trade Wagon to sell in other regions, alone or with others. Trading is in Early Access but not in the Steam Next Fest demo, and XL Games has not described the risks, routes or PvP rules of a run, as of Oct 20, 2026.
-
Housing and FarmingHousing returns in ArcheAge Chronicles in dedicated housing zones split into channels, so every player can claim a home without the original ArcheAge's land rush; a claimed home stays in place for you and your neighbors, and interiors and exteriors can be customized. Housing is in Early Access but not in the demo, and farming is promised but not yet described, as of Oct 20, 2026.
-
Crafting and Life SkillsArcheAge Chronicles' life skills are hunting, gathering, farming, housing and crafting: you gather, process and craft what you need, learn recipes (some found in chests), and crafting feeds your character's growth and the player economy. The demo has gathering and potion cooking; XL Games has not published a list of professions, as of Oct 20, 2026.
-
Exploration and GlidersAuroria is built to be wandered, XL Games says: few map markers, points of interest and chests that give most of your EXP, a glider you earn through quests, swimming and underwater gathering, and Nui Statues that creators report double as fast travel points. Mounts are not confirmed, as of Oct 20, 2026.
