Reception and Previews
As of Oct 20, 2026, ArcheAge Chronicles has no Steam user reviews and no reviews from major outlets, because it has not been released. Its free Steam Next Fest demo reached No. 1 on the festival's Top Demos chart on opening day and peaked at 20,507 players at once (SteamDB), while early press and creators are split between praise for the world and doubts about the combat's polish and depth.
ArcheAge Chronicles has no Steam user reviews and no reviews from major outlets as of Oct 20, 2026, because it has not been released: only a free Steam Next Fest Demo (Oct 19 to 26, 2026) and a short Network Test in September have been playable. Early reactions are split. The demo reached No. 1 on Next Fest's Top Demos chart on opening day (XL Games) and drew 20,507 players at once (SteamDB). Creators who played the Sep 12 Network Test mostly praised the world and called the combat a decent base that needs more depth; Ser Medieval, in his review of Sep 14, 2026, settles the debate over whether it is a real MMO ("I think it is a true MMO") and says the game "was way better than I thought it was going to be". Press after the demo was cooler: MeinMMO's headline reads "After the demo of ArcheAge Chronicles, I wish New World back". What the game is is on ArcheAge Chronicles.

The demo's numbers
The free demo, a separate Steam app, opened on Oct 19, 2026 at 10:00 AM PDT. XL Games announced that it reached No. 1 on both the Top Demos and Trending Upcoming charts of Steam Next Fest early on Oct 20 in Korea (Inven Global). SteamDB, read on Oct 20, 2026, shows an all-time peak of 20,507 players at once, a 24-hour peak of 20,446 and 5,470 players at the time of reading; MeinMMO and Addicting Games reported the same 20,507 on the first evening. For comparison, Notebookcheck, reading SteamDB, says the original ArcheAge never passed 7,000 players at once on Steam. Neither the demo nor the game has any Steam user reviews, as of Oct 20, 2026. The count is tracked on Steam Player Count.
Press impressions of the demo
MeinMMO's Karsten Scholz (Oct 20, 2026) played about 140 minutes before the demo sent him back to character select, and compared it with Amazon's New World: action combat with weapon switching, pirates on the coast, a grounded setting and staged dialogue. He found the combat "action-packed" with a satisfying weight, but "too unpolished and not challenging enough", with a long parry window, and found gathering gave "barely any audiovisual feedback". He liked the staged dialogue and the atmospheric world, and recommends a controller. His verdict: the game never reaches New World's recent quality, and XL Games has a lot of work ahead.
The Korean outlet Kyunghyang Games (Oct 20, 2026) was warmer about one thing: PvP. Its reviewer found the early balance lenient (generous parry timing, red attacks you dodge, staggered enemies you can execute, dungeons soloable) but saw in the PvP skills and combos a revival of hardcore Western-style PvP MMORPGs, while warning that this style sets a high barrier for newcomers and differs from what fans of the original sandbox expect. Notebookcheck (Oct 20, 2026) relayed mixed reactions under the demo trailer, from "sluggish movement, clunky controls and technical issues" to praise, and headlined its piece "Like Zelda, but an MMO?" after XL Games' own comparison with Breath of the Wild. How the fights work is on Combat and PvP.
Creators on the Network Test
Creators who played the Sep 12, 2026 Network Test were most surprised by how full the world felt. Azrial, in "Why It Feels Like A REAL MMO" (Sep 14, 2026), says he kept running into other players and recognizing names around towns, with crowds gathering at bosses "like you would in New Worlds", which gave him "that proper MMO feeling". Ser Medieval counted "at least 75 to 100 plus players in a given area" in the same test. How players meet is on Multiplayer and Guilds.
The combat got a guarded verdict. Azrial, who prefers action combat, calls it "okay": "It was decent and it definitely has a foundation", but it "Definitely needs more complexity", and he compares it to a less complicated Black Desert and a slower New World. Later in the video he found the Ranger and Mage the smoothest classes and the Berserker the clunkiest, and asked for more impact in the sound design.
FrozenCloud's "Combat & Classes: Everything You Need to Know" (Sep 14, 2026) names what felt unfinished in the Network Test: no party interface and no matchmaking, so you had to stand next to someone to group up, and missing voice-over in much of the dialogue. He liked the stamina-based combat and found weapon switching clunky, worrying that too few trait points would leave the second weapon unused. He calls the game, for now, an open-world action RPG with other players wandering around rather than a full MMO, and gives it "7 out of 10". Trait points are explained on Progression and Traits.
Ser Medieval was the most enthusiastic: his Network Test review calls ArcheAge Chronicles his new favorite MMO. He praised the parry system and gliding, ranked the Longsword Warrior and Hatchet Ranger his favorites, and found the bosses too easy once learned. Anders posted 30 minutes of raw Network Test footage on Sep 14, 2026 without commentary.
Network Test feedback and XL Games' answers
The loudest complaint after the Network Test was gender-locked classes. Ser Medieval reported in his review that the Berserker and Warrior were male only and the Ranger and Mage female only "at the moment", and expected backlash (XL Games has not confirmed which class is which gender in writing). Executive Producer Yongjin Ham wrote on Sep 15, 2026 that players had raised gender-locked classes, black screens, the party interface and griefing; fixes for the last three were in development, but the gender lock would stay at Early Access. On Oct 18 he went further: work on more gender options "is now underway", starting with some classes, though not in the demo. The same letter said voice-over and facial animation, missing from the test, were now "fully implemented", and listed party quest sharing, clearer hints and better hit detection. The details are on Character Creation and Gender Lock.
XL Games asks for this feedback openly. In his Oct 7, 2026 video, Ham says (in Korean, with English subtitles) that the team wants action that is fun alone and more fun together, that combat and growth are still being refined, and that checking only inside the team misses things, so players should send what feels lacking and what is fun as they play. Global Project Manager Don promised on Sep 18, 2026 to post regularly "both when things go well, and when they don't".
Long-running skepticism
Some of the coolness comes from history. The game was announced as ArcheAge 2 in 2022 and slipped from a 2024 target year after year; Massively OP wrote on Jul 30, 2026 that it had been "delayed so many times" that readers might be better off not pining for it, and earlier called it "the fluffier and more mainstreamy rebrand of ArcheAge 2". Fans of the original sandbox, with its land ownership and faction war, are not all happy with an action game for smaller groups, MeinMMO notes, and some doubt its business model because of the predecessor's "Pay2Win past". XL Games' answer is buy to play with no paid shop at the start of Early Access and no pay to win ever; see Price and Pay to Win and Differences From ArcheAge. The delays are on Development History.
What to watch next
The first real reviews will come with Early Access on Steam, planned for later in 2026 (Kakao Games has said Q4 2026), with no date or price announced as of Oct 20, 2026. XL Games has promised the date and "box price" "as soon as we're ready". Watch for the demo's last days (it closes Oct 26, 2026 at 10:00 AM PDT), any Steam reviews once Early Access opens, hands-on previews from major English outlets, and how XL Games answers the demo feedback on combat depth, the gender lock and polish. The schedule is on Release Date and Early Access.

CombatArcheAge Chronicles uses action combat, not tab targeting: light and heavy attacks, dodges, rolls, blocks and parries on a stamina bar, two weapons you swap between in a fight, and skills reached through button combinations instead of a hotbar of dozens of slots. Ranged attacks can be parried straight back at the attacker. -
PvPPvP in ArcheAge Chronicles is opt-in by channel. In standard channels nobody can attack you; in PvP channels anyone outside your party and guild can, you switch at a Nui Statue with a cooldown, and PvP channels give 10 to 15% bonus EXP on monster kills but no reward for killing players yet (XL Games, Oct 4, 2026).

Multiplayer and GuildsArcheAge Chronicles is an always-online game you can play solo or with others. Zones are split into channels of about 100 players, parties hold up to four, guilds and "company" activities are in Early Access, and the demo runs servers in five locations (North America East and West, Europe Central, Asia East and South).
