Beginner's Guide

In your first hours of ArcheAge Chronicles, pick a class by which of its two weapons you like, place your stat points every level, explore points of interest (most EXP comes from quests and discoveries, not kills), break Raeven's Coilstones for trait points, bring Nui Tears to Nui Statues for more HP, earn the glider, group up for field bosses, and switch between standard and PvP channels at a Nui Statue.

Starting out in ArcheAge Chronicles comes down to a short checklist, as the free Demo and September's Network Test showed it: pick a class by which of its two weapons you enjoy, place your stat points every time you level, step off the road to find points of interest (most EXP comes from quests and discoveries, not from killing monsters), break Raeven's Coilstones for trait points, bring Nui Tears to Nui Statues for more health, earn your glider, team up when a field boss is too much, and choose at a Nui Statue whether you play in a standard channel or a PvP one. Azrial, who played the Network Test, gives the same order in his demo guide of Oct 12, 2026: follow the main quest at first to get your bearings, branch out as you get comfortable, and listen to NPCs, because some of them mark places on your map; in his words, follow the story, learn what your weapons can do, and give yourself room to explore. Everything below is from the demo and test builds, so details may change before Early Access, which is planned for later in 2026 with no date announced as of Oct 20, 2026 (Release Date and Early Access).

Before you start

The ArcheAge Chronicles demo is free on Steam during Steam Next Fest, from Oct 19, 10:00 AM to Oct 26, 10:00 AM PDT, 2026 (Oct 20 to 27 in Korea), worldwide and with no application: click "Download Demo" on the store page. XL Games describes it as roughly two to three hours of quest content around Diamond Shores, one of the early regions, plus the high-level dungeon Throne of Hinnon and PvP channels. Housing and trade are not in it, and "Progress and save data from the demo will not carry over to the Early Access version", so there is no reason to rush. At the end of the demo area the game sends you back to character select (MeinMMO got there after about 140 minutes), so you can try another class. Check your PC first on PC System Requirements: Steam asks for 100 GB on an SSD.

Choosing a class

Choose your class by its two weapons, because the weapon decides how you fight. Azrial runs through the options: the Warrior's Longsword leans into parries and counters while its Greatsword builds and spends Resolve, and he calls the Warrior "probably the easiest class to understand"; the Ranger has a Longbow for fighting at range and a Hatchet for mobile close combat; the Berserker pairs an Axe with a shield or swings a Warhammer for heavier hits that need good timing. The Mage casts at range with the Elemental Staff or fights up close with frost through the Wavesword. His advice: if the first weapon does not click, give the second a proper try before deciding the class is not for you. You can swap between your two weapons on the spot (Q on a keyboard in MeinMMO's demo). Note that each class is locked to one gender for now; see Character Creation and Gender Lock. Every class is compared on Classes.

Combat basics

Combat is action, not tab targeting, and stamina is the resource to watch. FrozenCloud, who played the Network Test, explains in his Sep 14, 2026 review: attacks and dodges both spend stamina, so spending it all leaves you unable to dodge; enemies hit hard; combos come from combinations of light and heavy attacks on the two mouse buttons and differ by weapon. There is a lock-on, though he preferred the free camera. Watch for red attacks: enemies throw "unblockable red flag attacks" and will dodge your hits too. Beyond attacking, you can dodge, parry, jump and sprint, and on most weapons a good parry is followed by a counterattack (MeinMMO). Learn your weapon's defensive option early; Azrial says the combat took him an hour or two to click. MeinMMO recommends a controller, which Steam fully supports. More on Combat.

Leveling, stats and traits

You get stronger in two separate ways: levels give stat points, and bosses give trait points. FrozenCloud sums up the Network Test: beat mobs and bosses, get better gear, level up, but the "reven call stones" (Raeven's Coilstones) are the bigger deal, because breaking them after killing their bosses grants the trait points that unlock your weapon's deeper combos. He also got three stat points every level and put two into his main stat and one into stamina. XL Games' Global Project Manager Don confirms the design in his Oct 15, 2026 post: every level gives points for six stats (Strength, Agility, Constitution, Intelligence, Talent, Endurance), one point always buys one stat, and the character screen previews the change before you commit. Each weapon has its own trait tree, so decide which weapon gets your first points. The full system is on Progression and Traits.

The fastest way to level is not grinding monsters. "Defeating monsters gives you some EXP, but most of it comes from questing, finding things out in the world, and completing points of interest," Don writes, so a quest you skipped or a ruin you passed is worth more than another camp of wolves.

Exploring without markers

ArcheAge Chronicles does not cover the map with quest markers, so exploring is how you find work. In Azrial's Network Test video of Sep 14, 2026, some NPCs add small footstep markers to your map where something is worth investigating, and going there opens a real quest; you can also stumble on the same place without talking to anyone and the quest starts anyway. MeinMMO found the same in the demo: after a linear tutorial you get a rough goal and "stumble upon new missions while exploring the region". XL Games added a guide to how hints are shown after testers found some clues hard to read (Executive Producer Yongjin Ham, Oct 18, 2026). Chests can hide behind waterfalls and open once per character, so nobody can beat you to one. More on Exploration and Gliders and Auroria.

Nui Tears and Nui Statues

Pick up every Nui Tear you see and hand them in at a Nui Statue to raise your maximum HP. FrozenCloud points out that the game "does not hold your hand": quests are marked only when you are near the town or NPC that gives them, Nui Tears are not shown on your map (a stone icon appears only when you are close), and the statues double as checkpoints and fast-travel points. XL Games says the first increases take only a handful of tears and each later one takes a few more. Nui Statues are also where you switch channels (below).

Getting the glider

The glider is earned through quests, not bought: MeinMMO got one while exploring the demo's open world and used it to glide from a height to a distant island. Ser Medieval, in his Network Test review of Sep 14, 2026, calls the gliding "amazing", with the lean-back move of the original ArcheAge, and describes the other systems you meet early: the stat point screen, Nui Statues you unlock around the world and can fast travel between, and Nui Tears that raise your maximum HP at them.

Gathering and crafting

Gather as you go: Azrial found "gatherable resources pretty much everywhere" in the Network Test (trees, berries, coral and animals to skin). In the demo you learn to cook healing potions, skin animals, pick berries, cut wood and mine (MeinMMO), and MeinMMO passed berry fields and cooking stations at the demo's instanced pirate camp. Chests and field bosses can give gear, crafting materials and rare recipes. Housing and trade are not in the demo. See Crafting and Life Skills.

Playing with others

You can play alone, but parties of up to four make field bosses and dungeons easier. Azrial explains the world: each zone is split into channels of about 100 players, the game places you in one, your party stays together between zones, and a friend in another channel can be joined by switching. Dungeons and some points of interest are instanced for you or your party, and quest progress inside is shared. When a field boss such as the big bear in the demo's starting area is too strong, wait for others: creators found crowds gathering at bosses in the Network Test. XL Games added party quest sharing for the demo. See Multiplayer and Guilds and Dungeons.

PvP channels

PvP is opt-in: in standard channels players cannot attack each other at all, and only PvP channels allow it. Azrial explains that in a PvP channel anyone except your party and guild can attack you, the zone, monsters and quests are otherwise the same, and you switch at a Nui Statue with a cooldown so you cannot flee mid-fight. In the demo, per Ham's Oct 18, 2026 letter, you can enter a PvP channel once you leave the first town and reach the Nui Statue at your next destination. Monster kills there give 10 to 15% bonus EXP; killing players gives no reward yet (XL Games, Oct 4, 2026). Azrial's advice is to get comfortable with your weapons first. More on PvP.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best class for beginners in ArcheAge Chronicles? It depends on how you like to fight, and XL Games does not rank the classes. Azrial calls the Warrior "probably the easiest class to understand" in ArcheAge Chronicles, with the Longsword built on parries and counters; try both of a class's weapons before switching classes.

How do you get the glider in ArcheAge Chronicles? In the ArcheAge Chronicles demo, the glider comes from quests you find while exploring the open world after the tutorial (MeinMMO, Oct 20, 2026). XL Games has not published a step-by-step route, as of Oct 20, 2026.

What do Nui Statues do in ArcheAge Chronicles? Nui Statues in ArcheAge Chronicles take your Nui Tears to raise your maximum HP and are where you switch between standard and PvP channels (XL Games). Creators also used them as fast-travel points and checkpoints.

How do you level fast in ArcheAge Chronicles? Do quests and find points of interest: XL Games says most EXP in ArcheAge Chronicles comes from questing, discoveries and points of interest, with monster kills giving only some. Monster kills in PvP channels give 10 to 15% bonus EXP.

Can you play ArcheAge Chronicles solo? Yes. XL Games says dungeons in ArcheAge Chronicles can be taken on solo or in a party of up to four, and most of the demo can be played alone; some field bosses are easier with other players.

Does demo progress carry over to Early Access? No. XL Games says progress and save data from the ArcheAge Chronicles demo will not carry over to the Early Access version.
